Study This is the cost of keeping a secret
Study This is the cost of keeping a secretStudy This is the cost of keeping a secretWhen you keep a secret at work, youre entering a vow of silence that will take more willpower than just keeping your mouth shut. As new research on the experience of keeping a secret shows, secrecy takes a psychological toll on our minds, suggesting that the intention to conceal information, and not the concealment itself, is what makes secrecy so potentially harmful. For a new paper published in Attitudes and Social Cognition, researchers from Columbia University broadly redefined what secrecy could be, saying that a secret becomes a secret the moment someone decides to withhold information about an episode or act from another person. The researchers gave the example of a job candidate who wishes to conceal the fact that they have no other job interviews lined up. When the day of the big interview comes, the candidate never gets asked Where else are you interviewing?, but the researchers would still con sider this a secret because of the decision-making thinking and intent that job candidate mustve expended thinking about this information.Thinking about your secret is worse than keeping itTo show the repercussions of being a secret keeper, the researchers recruited 200 different participants to take part in experiments where they would take surveys on if they had a personal secret, moments they had to conceal that secret in interactions, how often they thought about having to keep that secret, and whether that secret impacted their life satisfaction and has made my life and well-being worse. What they found welches that being in social settings that require you to keep a secret doesnt matter as much as how much you dwell on having a secret. The more participants mind-wandered to their secret outside of social settings that necessitated keeping quiet, the more they felt the secret hurt their well-being.The researchers suggest secrecys connection to wellbeing is because wellbeing is n ot just the state of feeling good, its also tied to living up to ones values and being authentic. When you have a secret, you are entering a binding agreement where you cannot express yourself fully. The more participants report being preoccupied with their secrets, the more those secrets seem to burden them, influencing how challenging other tasks seem, the study states. What seems to be harmful about secrecy, is not having to conceal a secret, but having to live with it.

Accentures ambitious goal a workforce of half men, half women
Accentures ambitious goal a workforce of half men, half womenAccentures ambitious goal a workforce of half men, half womenThe population of humanity is roughly 50% women and 50% men.Companies? Not so much. Its no secret that theres a lack of women in many corporate executive positions, and that certain industries that are more male dominated overall can present barriers to women in the working world.Today, global professional services company Accentureannounced its goal for the year 2025- to have a completely gender-balanced staff, meaning 50% women and 50% men.The fundament for the push Research shows that having more women in high places at work can be good for business.Where Accenture is and where its goingAccenture is already pretty close. The company reportedly has 150,000 women on staff currently, which is about 40% of its employees internationally.According to an infographic, 28% of Accentures executives are women, meaning managers, managing directors and people on the Global Management Committee, which is currently 25% women. The companys board of directors - who oversee the company and are leid employees - is about 30% women.Ellyn Shook, chief leadership human resources officer at Accenture, commented on the new gender-balanced staff initiative in a statement. We embrace diversity as a source of creativity and competitive advantageAs we work toward 50 by 25, our ultimate goal is to create a truly human environment where people have a real sense of belonging, where they can show up every day, be who they are and be their best, both professionally and personally, Shook said in a statement.Accenture has reportedly taken steps toward this goal, including being transparent about employee demographics in various countries, training women to develop more in-demand skills through programming, and working with businesses and the federal government as part of various gender equality initiatives. The company has also publishedresearch on ending the gender pay ga p.In terms of diversity,Fortune reported in 2016 that Accenture was the first large consulting firm to release information on race and gender. The company also sponsors Fortunes Most Powerful Women initiative. In terms of gender equality, in 2016, Accenture reportedly went beyond its goal of having 40% of new employees be womenby 2017. It has aimed to have women make up 25% of its managing directors internationally by 2020.Last year was the year that 30% of women made it to managing director positions at Accenture - the largest percentage in its history. The nature of industries with fewer womenBut Accentures pledge to haveas many women as there are men in its workforce is not out of left field- while the company has worked for further progression in this areabefore, this campaign speaks to the nature of male-dominated spots in the the US labor market.Catalyst recently reported thatbased on information from the United States Department of Labor, Womens Bureau, male-dominated occupat ions are ones in which women are less than 25% of the workforce. While Catalyst listed clerical, service, and professional occupations as areas where women dominate internationally, it said that men dominate in crafts and related trades, as well as, increasingly, plant and machine operator and assembler jobs, citing research. The same article also cited previous Catalyst research stating thatindustries and jobs where men are much more prevalent are susceptible to male stereotypes, making it harder for women to get ahead in those spaces. Additionally, male-heavy executive teams establish the tone for talent management norms that let these stereotypes affect the processes of moving up the ranks and chances for development, and that systems can be susceptible to biases favoring men, leading to less diverse workforces.

Your spring wardrobe What you should be wearing or buying now
Your spring wardrobe What you should be wearing or buying now Your spring wardrobe What you should be wearing or buying now Spring is in the air at long last! So, why does your work wardrobe still look like youâre in deepest layered hibernation? If youâre thinking of making a work style upgrade, these are some of your best bets for the months ahead.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! For himGo for a slight color shift:If color is your thing, but your work environment is still very traditional, youâll have to be careful with just how much zing you add to your spring.âTo stand out and not be too odd in the workplace, the classic blue and grey suits are still the way to go but subtly change the shade of blue to a marine blue or the grey to a pearl or soft medium grey shade,â advises Ralph Auriemma, Creative Director at Paul Stuart.Change a single detail:Like the humble caterpillar, you donât have to transform into a thing of beauty instantly. Choose one or two details to update as it warms u p. âMen can change their suit style to a peak lapel or a one-button jacket,â said Auriemma. âAnother option is to change your shirt style to a spread collar instead of a button-down collar, add color in your neckties, change from a solid white or blue shirt to a shirt with stripes (they donât have to be bold stripes) and add a fancy pocket square. These changes will give you style and flair; you will look like you own the office.âOn days when the temperatures rise considerably, Auriemma recommends a âsuper soft navy blazer with an unconstructed lining. It will keep you looking professional but cool as a cucumber at the same time.âEmbrace pattern:Auriemma took inspiration from the vintage seaside of the Riviera in the 1920s when designing the new Phineas Cole collection. What this means for someone looking for suiting inspiration is that instead of boring grey stripes, you can add vintage batik prints in blue color tones, âwashedâ leather jackets and details that lo ok like youâve been paying attention without making fashion your god.For herSince women can be somewhat more creative in their work attire, you can be more playful this season.Playful is in:The big trends this spring are âunconventional polka dots, bold florals, scarf prints, leopard, reptile and tiger prints in refreshing colors. Textured linen, cottons, and flowy fabrics will be on trendâ offers Adriana Martinez, Creative Director at LUVMEMORE. She predicts a season that is âflirty, fun and plentiful in bold colors.âOne detail at a time:Martinez says âThe best way to express your individuality in the workplace is to layer with a pop of print, or color peeking through. Statement jewelry is also a key trend, accessorize and donât be afraid to add bold color to your everyday workwear.â- - - Not ready to shell out the big bucks for a whole new look? Consider one or two investment pieces or accessories.Think Pink: If I have to choose one favorite piece this season, it âs a pink herringbone hooded spring coat from Social Eras. Every coat in the collection is under $200 and they are so beautifully made and flattering to nearly every shape.Make it Sock-sy: âColorful, patterned, or novelty socks provide instant style to any outfit,â offers Issac E. Ash, President CEO of United Legwear Apparel Co., the parent company of FUN SOCKS. Adding cute detail in the form of a pop of color or detail from the ankle down shows youâre feeling spring, in even a subtle way. âFun Socks are a timeless winner; because theyâre a small hit of interest, thereâs no risk of âover-doingâ it.âNot so straight-laced: Whiskers Laces are bespoke dress shoelaces that come in a variety of cute colors and designs. Even the most basic grey suede oxford is suddenly transformed with on-trend detailing.Specs appeal: Hollywood stylist Kate Young (clients include Dakota Johnson and Selena Gomez) recently partnered with iconic eyeglasses brand Tura on a few new collect ions. She advises updating your eyewear game at least every 18 months or so. Details to look for right now are unexpected metallic touches, or sheer tinted acetate frames with just a hint of blush. Young calls these colors âcosmeticâ since they act the same way that a hint of bronzer or blush might. The âitâ color: Pantoneâs color of the year for 2019 is Living Coral, which looks exactly the way youâd expect it to. If youâre stuck on neutrals but want to update your look slightly, a simple cotton t-shirt (try this one from Eddie Bauer) updates even your most basic jeans and ballet flat combo. Over 40 Under 30 How to Fight Age Stereotypes
Over 40 Under 30 How to Fight Age Stereotypes How to Fight Age Stereotypes Over 40 Under 30 How to Fight Age Stereotypes No hiring manager would dare admit it, but if they were asked to envision the ideal job candidate, they'd probably picture someone in their 30s (old enough to understand the ways of the workplace, but not so old that they're set in their ways). Hey, we all have preconceived notions about flighty kids or cranky old folks. But the good news for the under-30s and over-40s is that there aren't enough of those so-called ideal candidates to go around. There are also anti-discrimination laws to protect people who've been denied employment based on age, but it can betough to prove. Besides, it's not that difficult to get around employers' age-based fears and stereotypes in your interviews. Let's explore the unfair assumptions people might have about you, and more importantly, what you can do about them: OLDER Worker Stereotypes Poor computer and technology skills Low energy, old-school thinking Unable or unwilling to learn new things Expect high salaries Won't work well with younger colleagues or supervisors To Fight These Assumptions: Update your resume, especially by adding a Summary of Qualifications and leaving out irrelevant jobs from 10 to 15 (or more) years ago. Talk about technology, recent courses you've completed, and your enthusiasm for learning. Plan some vibrant stories that highlight recent on-the-job accomplishments. Make it clear that you understand current salary trends and have realistic expectations. Give examples of times when you've collaborated effectively with age-diverse teams. YOUNGER Worker Stereotypes Easily bored or distracted Sense of entitlement Need for constant affirmation and praise Likely to be texting or using Facebook or Twitter during work hours Unreliable and unmotivated To Fight These Assumptions: Dress and act in a business-appropriate way. Learn all you can about the organization's mission and goals, and show enthusiasm for helping meet them. If your work experience is sparse, talk about volunteer work, academics, or athletic achievements to demonstrate things like work ethic, collaboration, and organization. Pay close attention to what the interviewers ask, and ask questions in return to show you're engaged. Keep your iPod and cell phone out of eye- and earshot. We all age at the same rate, and there's little we can do to speed up or slow down the process. But if you know what red flags your age might raise in an employer's mind, you'll be better able to fight them. Forewarned is forearmed, as the saying goes. Once you show employers that those unfair stereotypes don't apply to you, they'll replace their initial fears with a new sense of respect for the valuable contributions you can bring to their business.

5 ways you can make a new city feel like home
5 ways you can make a new city feel like home 5 ways you can make a new city feel like home You land your dream job, but thereâs one big catch- itâs all the way across the country.Donât say no just because a move is such a hassle. Hereâs how to get used to things once you get there, whether youâre moving alone or relocating your family.Join clubs and affinity groupsWhether itâs through your job or outside of work entirely (i.e., an college alumni network), find a place to bond with people who speak your language professionally through clubs and affinity groups. Chances are, there will also be ample networking opportunities to help you advance professionally and get the support you need.Joining a non-work-related club can give you a healthy outlet to feed your hobbies. In doing so, youâll probably make new friends who enjoy some of the same things you do.Get to know other parentsLyss Stern, founder of Divalysscious Moms, a networking event company for New York City moms, told Parents about how moms can meet other moms through their kids.âA baby in a stro ller is the perfect conversation starterâ¦Youâll be amazed at how many people will stop to look at and comment on your adorable little baby - and though it might seem annoying at first, donât be afraid to use it to your advantage. People love to connect people. You never know who will have a daughter or a friend with a baby the same age.âThis may also spark relationships between your kids, which could help them adjust.Let your kids enjoy familiar thingsA HuffPost article explains how to âengage in familiar routinesâ as part of helping kids cope with relocation.âIn the midst of change, children need to lean on the things that are the same. Read the stories they love, maintain consistent bedtime rituals, play favorite games and sit down together for family meals - even if youâre surrounded by boxes!â it says.Be open to experiences that pop upAnnie Ferrer writes about socializing, even when youâre tired, in a Mic article about âsettling in and making new friendsâ after she moved from New York City to Washington, D.C. for a job.âI typically save socializing for the weekends. But when youâre in the market for mates, you donât have the luxury of calibrating your social calendar. If your coworkers are happy-houring, go. If your building is throwing a mixer, attend. If your yoga buddy wants to grab dinner despite dripping in sweat, change your shirt and dig in. Small and spontaneous sacrifices that may upset your routine are usually moments that generate the most cherished memories.âRemember where you came fromA Readerâs Digest article expands on this in an article about getting used to a new city that may not have your heart.âTo keep from getting too homesick, subscribe to your former city magazine or newspaper. Display photos of or souvenirs from your favorite places in your old town. Hang decorations from your former home. Just donât go overboard- hanging on to too much from your past will keep you from moving forward and rea lly enjoying your new home,â the article says.

5 surprising self-care habits you can do at home
5 surprising self-care habits you can do at home 5 surprising self-care habits you can do at home For all the relatable #selfcare content on Twitter and Instagram, I canât help but think that self-care, IRL, often consists of so much more. Sure, a Boomerang loop of your well-manicured fingers dropping a Lush bath bomb into the tub is good for IG engagement, and, OK, maybe it forces you to spend some time alone, but thatâs not the only option, is it?Iâve found that mundane errands (which, admittedly, donât photograph well) can do just as much for my mental health, if not more, than a $12 bubble bath or face mask ever could. I know, I know - you may be wondering why on earth anyone would suggest running errands or doing chores as self-care. Well, because running errands and doing chores helps me feel like my life is put together, thatâs why. It tells the world, âNothing to see here, folks. Iâve got this all under control.âRunning errands and doing chores helps me feel like my life is put together.Sometimes, coming home to a tidy apartment at the end of a long day o r waking up to a vase of fresh flowers by your bedside is all it takes to put you in a better mood. It doesnât solve all of your problems - in fact, it may not even solve a single problem at all - but, if you think about it, neither does a bubble bath. When it comes to self-care, one size doesnât fit all. What works for one person might do very little for another. And what looks cute on Instagram - cough, bath bombs, cough - might cost you a fortune and all your mental energy to choose the right filter for. So consider what little tasks make you the most happy once youâve checked them off your list. The goal of self-care, really, is to do something that helps you feel better about yourself and your life, even if itâs only temporary. Next time youâre in the mood for some #selfcare, try one of these underrated home remedies.1. Write a to-do list ahead of the new weekMental clutter can be debilitating. You end up panicking about all the things you have to do without actuall y accomplishing any of them. And now that youâve gotten yourself all worked up, itâs almost impossible to tackle anything else. Before the Sunday scaries kick in, take a few minutes to sit quietly and write a to-do list for the upcoming week. You can do this in a journal if writing by hand is therapeutic for you, or you can type something up quickly in the Notes app on your phone. This list should be practical and reasonable - donât list tasks you know you wonât be able to accomplish in a week. Similarly, donât dump long-term life goals in here, either. It wonât work, and truthfully, it will only exacerbate your frustration. A short, simple, feasible list will be infinitely more beneficial, both for your brain and for everything you need to get done.2. Make your bedIâm guilty of not getting to this every day because - come on, who isnât? When I do manage to check this off my to-do list before jumping back into bed at night, Iâm so grateful that I did. Ideally, I like to get this done as soon as I wake up because it sets a productive tone for the rest of my day. But, on days when my morning routine is far less predictable, it still helps to make my bed before I get back in it. Thereâs something deeply comforting about sinking into just-fluffed pillows that seems to right all the dayâs wrongs.3. Go grocery shopping instead of eating outI donât think I have a single friend for whom grocery shopping is a regular undertaking. With food delivery services like Seamless, Uber Eats, and Postmates, all offering to bring you whatever your heart - I mean, your tummy - desires, thereâs no real reason to go grocery shopping on your own. In fact, even if you do decide you want to cook, millennial convenience is so real that you can even have your groceries delivered, which Iâve done on occasion. But whether you make the trek to Trader Joeâs yourself or you use a grocery delivery service, itâs not a bad idea to stock your fridge with the es sentials every two weeks. The fact is that itâs nice to wake up in the morning and not have to wonder where you should grab breakfast, or better yet, not have to join the super long bagel line a few blocks away from your apartment. Itâll save you money on takeout in the long run, too.4. Clear your email inboxThere is no greater feeling than getting rid of the astronomical number floating above your email inbox icon on your phoneâs home screen. This is utopia - and you can recreate it for yourself once a week by clearing your inbox. Odds are your phone is abuzz all day with new notifications, which means youâve mastered the art of knowing, with one quick glance, if something is important or not. Do the same with the emails in your inbox. Swipe left on those marketing emails about sales at stores youâre fairly certain youâve never heard of, and flag the emails worth paying attention to for when youâre ready to dig in.5. Do your laundryRead the tags. Sort your delicates. Count your change if you need to. Just get it done. Fresh laundry, and especially fresh linen, can feel like a fresh start on life (or, at least, a fresh start to the week). If you can bring your favorite white tee back to life with a quick spin in the wash cycle, you can literally brighten your day just by washing your dirty clothes. This article was originally posted on Shondaland.com.

What You Can Do to Promote Women in Leadership Roles
What You Can Do to Promote Women in Leadership Roles What You Can Do to Promote Women in Leadership Roles Women still have the challenge to make what men make for the same job and to attain the promotions that will place them in leadership roles. But, women have made progress and they can make more. With the current attention employers, the legal community, and the media are paying to the concept of equality and gender fairness, a better time to promote the positive need for more women in leadership roles has never existed. The opportunity has infinite possibilities for a more fair and equitable workplace that takes advantage of the strengths that both genders bring to management and leadership. With this in mind, Susan Lucas-Conwell who is the Global Chief Executive Officer at Great Place to Work ® participated in an interview. An accomplished business leader, Susan provides a keen perspective on how building and maintaining great workplace culture drives business success. She is also an expert on how women can flourish in leadership roles in organizations. Susan Heathfield: What are the biggest challenges women face in the workplace? Susan Lucas-Conwell: Many of the challenges that women face in the workplace are the same as those for men. These challenges include work/life balance, parenting, juggling many responsibilities and multitasking. Challenges specific to women continue to be a wage gap- women still earn only 73 percent of what men do for the same job. Discrimination remains present in the workplace; sexual harassment is unfortunately not a thing of the past and the higher up you are promoted, the fewer women there are. There are fewer role models and mentors for women leaders. UC Davis published a study in 2011 that examined the 400 largest companies in California. This study showed that only 9.7 percent of board room seats or top paying executive positions were held by women. Thirty-four percent had no women on their executive board and none of the companies in the study had an all-female board. In addition, none of the companies had a gender-balanced board or management team. Heathfield: How can women overcome these challenges? Lucas-Conwell: Whether perceived or real, women leaders sometimes feel pressure to conform to the male leadership model and if she bends to that pressure, she sacrifices one of her own sources of strength and personal power. The first step toward overcoming any challenge is awareness. Once aware, she can put some queues in place to remind herself to rely on her emotional intelligence and the immediate situation demands rather than conforming to some role model and associated actions she is preconditioned to think is required. Women can overcome this by staying true to and acting from their innate strengths (e.g. creativity and collaboration) in their everyday approach to work and overcoming the inevitable obstacles. Women tend to lead from a more interactive, cooperative style which often results in strengthening the sense-of-team in employees or as we say at Great Place to Work âwe are all in this together,â inspiring a higher degree of commitment to strive to achieve the businessâ goals. Heathfield: What are the benefits of having women on the executive board? Lucas-Conwell: Primarily, itâs the balance that women bring to an executive board. Simply said, women bring a different perspective based on a different set of life experiences. This perspective can broaden and deepen the executive boardâs insight and pre-sight if you will, making it more effective and agile thus, more successful rising to the unique challenges their business faces in their respective market. But having women on the executive board isnât just the right thing to do- itâs good for the bottom line. As a recent Catalyst.org study reported, Fortune 500 companies with three or more women on the Board outperform other companies with 53 percent more returns on equities, 42 percent more return on sales and 66% more return invested capital. Yet, for example, according to the National Center for Women and Information Technology, women executives account for only 6 percent of chief executives at the top 100 tech companies. Heathfield: How can women leverage their unique outlook in the workplace? Lucas-Conwell: Women need to identify their unique talents, understand what they bring to their work environment to best enable success, and then, make sure that their voice is heard. Speak up, speak out, and contribute. Women may experience difficulty with this in many work environments. So, itâs important to find a community within the organization- mentors, role-models, networking groups- who can help navigate through an organization and provide a support system. Heathfield: How can organizations recruit, retain and develop women leaders? Lucas-Conwell: In the best workplaces/companies, significant attention and resources are focused on recruiting, retaining and developing women leaders. Itâs not only the right thing to do, but itâs also smart business. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to recruitment, retention, and development. Significant emphasis is placed on the benefits that an organization can offer. Onsite childcare, maternity benefits, womenâs networking groups, mentoring and development are important to women. But, ultimately, an organization that genuinely cares about their women employees will keep their women. We have found that those companies that have active policies in place that ensure equal rights for women and have taken active steps to redress that imbalance are most successful. We encourage organizations to give thoughtful attention to creating a gender-neutral environment. To do that, they must first truly understand what women in the organization want and need from their employers. What do they value? For some, it may be the option of flexible work arrangements or job-sharing. For others, it may be employee resources groups and mentors. Some of the best organizations have womenâs task force groups that they can ask to better understand what women need and value most. If women arenât staying at the organization, itâs important to know why and what can change to better enable them to stay for the long-term. Once this has been determined, the next step is to implement these programs, policies, and practices and to measure them for effectiveness. Heathfield: What changes do you forecast for women leaders in the workplace in the next five to ten years? Lucas-Conwell: As flexibility gets baked into how we do the work we do in organizations, flextime, work from home and virtual workplaces become the norm, weâll see more balance in the numbers of men and women at the leadership table, especially more women at the head of the table. And op-eds like Anne-Marie Slaughterâs, âWhy Women Canât Have it All,â will have shifted in tone to how the workplace enables us all, men and women, to have it all, however, we define it. Heathfield: How can we encourage more women to go into the high paying and job-almost-guaranteed fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM careers)? Lucas-Conwell: We need to approach this from two angles. First, there has been a slew of research that shows the value of exposing girls to STEM subjects early on. As a mother of girls myself, I speak from experience when I say that we need to encourage their curiosity and natural interest with programs and activities which keep the spark alive. However, we also need to lead by example. We need to celebrate the women who have been trailblazers in these subjects so that from a young age, women have more role models with whom they can identify. We have more women CEOs in the technology sector than weâve ever had before- from Yahoo! to IBM. But, we still have work to do at the middle management levels to increase the number of women at these companies. As that number, hopefully, increases, this too will help as they will, in turn, be mentors, leaders, role models and mothers to young girls. And, this is a good thing for workplaces world-wide. Trust this.

How to Ensure Gender Equality in the Workplace
How to Ensure Gender Equality in the Workplace How to Ensure Gender Equality in the Workplace What is gender equality? Asking this question at a dinner party could bring the whole party to a screeching halt, as people start arguing about gender, pay equity, and why women do the majority of the childcare. Your business cant fix the worlds problems (and just what those problems are is debatable depending on whom you ask), but you can make your workplace a better place for everyone. These recommended approaches will focus on creating gender equality in a workplace where everyone has the same opportunities and equal pay for equal work. If you want to make your business a place where men and women want to work and feel rewarded and cared for with their work, try implementing these five approaches to ensuring gender equality in your workplace.? Please note, you cant say, âHey we want our business to be more female friendly, so were going to implement special benefits for women.â This wont work legally, ethically, or motivationally as a way to deal with your workforce. You need to implement these actions across the board (with the exception of maternity leaves, which have biological implications). Men may take advantage of one area more than women and women may take advantage of another area at a greater rate than men do, but the key factor is that they are available to all people. Flexibility Harvard Economics Professor Claudia Goldman finds that one of the reasons women earn less money than men do is that they strongly prefer temporal flexibility over salary. That is, they are willing to turn down higher-paying jobs because those jobs come with more demanding hours or less predictable hours. Now some jobs just dont have temporal flexibility. If youre a neurosurgeon, you cant run out of surgery to go to your childs parent-teacher conference. Once you start that surgery, youre there until you finish. If youre a tax accountant, you will work long hours during the tax season. But, that doesnt mean that most jobs cant have some temporal flexibility worked into them. While women are more willing to make less money in favor of more flexible hours, men like flexibility, too. Implement policies that allow people to work from home- either full time or from time to time. Establish core business hours and then let people pick their schedules around that schedule. Jane may like to come in at 6 am and leave at 2 pm, while Helen may prefer to come in at 10 am and leave at 6 pm. Both are there for the core business hours of 10 am to 2 pm and both get their work done and have plenty of time to interact with team members. Why not provide the flexibility that employees cherish? Set Schedules This recommendation may seem to fly in the face of the previous suggestion, but different workplaces have different needs. If you run a retail or restaurant business, people cant work from home and having someone cut out in the middle of a shift for a personal emergency takes a toll on the other employees. So, you need to have people on site when you need them. Women, as noted, are often the primary parent- which means they are the ones who handle childcare, dentist appointments, and meetings with teachers more often than men. They need to know their schedules in advance to plan these things out. Otherwise, they have to either shuffle child care or call out with short notice. Having a set schedule (or at least a predictable one- Steve always works Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, and Jane always works Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday), can help give everyone in your business a chance to succeed without sacrificing home and family to do so. Salary Openness What would happen if you posted everyones salaries in the break room? Would you experience widespread complaining or would people shrug and go, âyeah, that sounds about right?â The United States (and many other countries) have traditional cultural restrictions on discussing pay. Companies consider that pay is confidential information (even though the National Labor Relations Act preserves the right of employees to discuss workplace conditions, including pay), and people consider it rude to discuss. So, the end result is, almost no one talks about salary. Employees should, though. And, no one is cheated by an unfair salary when the employers are open about what positions pay. Think about it: what if when you received a job offer, it didnt just say, âsalary: $50,000 per year, paid bimonthlyâ but gave you a list of your new coworkers salaries along with their titles? You would lose all claims of gender pay discrimination because the only way gender pay inequality can happen is when the information is kept behind closed doors. If you knew, before taking a job that Bob, Steve, and Carl each earned $60,000 for the same job that the company is offering to you for $50,000 youd say, âHow about $60,000?â and youd walk away if they said no. Management Training So often, people are promoted to management jobs based on their stellar performance as an individual contributor. Thats fine. Its pretty standard. But, managing people isnt like doing the work (although most management jobs have an awful lot of doing in addition to the managing). In order to make your workplace comfortable for men and women, make sure your managers are trained in how to manage. Why? Because a manager can make or break a company. Your managers need to know relevant employment laws. For instance, you cant punish someone for taking FMLA time- whether its for a broken leg or a new baby- and you cant treat people differently based on gender. You need to reward employee performance, not time in the seat, and you need to offer feedback to everyone. Most bad managers arent bad people; they are just poorly trained. Get every manager trained and hold regular refresher courses so that your company is a great company to work for, in every department. Great companies attract great people, male and female. Make Things Equal but Not the Same Sometimes managers think that they have to treat everyone in an identical manner. If Jane gets five MMs, then John better get five MMs as well. While this philosophy works in preschool, its not the way to approach management. When Jane asks for a more flexible schedule, dont deny it because John doesnt have one. Consider if her request is reasonable and say yes or no based on the facts. If John comes and asks for a flexible schedule, consider his request and say yes or no based on the facts of his situation. If youre ever in doubt about whether or not you can legally do something, double check with your employment law attorney. Remember, its cheaper to ask a question before than it is to pay the same lawyer to help you out with a lawsuit. Men and women want to work for great companies. Make yours great for all employees, and you wont have to worry about gender equality problems in your workplace. - - - - - - - - - - - - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance journalist specializing in Human Resources. Why Not Rhyming Resumes and Rapped Interviews
Why Not Rhyming Resumes and Rapped Interviews Why Not Rhyming Resumes and Rapped Interviews Iâm waiting, but, like Hell, it seems rap wonât flicker, die out and simply âgo awayâ. Far from it- in fact it has spread like spilled Coke on fire throughout Chinaâs culture and cities I visited on this extended road-trip of mine. So, of course, I canât help thinking: If, despite its detractors (like me), such a simple thing as relentlessly, usually very predictably rhyming, pounding speech in (rap) âmusicâ can inexplicably dominate the planet, why not use it in cover letters, or even resumes and interviews to captivate companies and capture jobs? (Dont laugh. Recently, there have been news reports of equally unusual, even weirder applications of rap: a rapped Canadian courtroom apology offered a victim by his convicted assailant and rapped responses of the defendant in a U.S. disorderly-conduct trial.) But, before answering the question, Why not rhyming resumes and rapped interviews?, a little background is in order. Mother Goose, Banging Spoons and Rap Perhaps I would have loved rap when I was an infant, because to me it sounds so much like the props of infancy: banging spoons, baby rattles, repetitive prattles, and Mother Goose nursery rhymes- make that âMuthaâ Gooseâ, to update the idiom and image. (This suggests that rap is at least a preschool offshoot, if not a replica or direct extension of a daycare curriculum.) Donât get me wrong: Rhyme is a very effective, if not absolutely essential teaching tool for the very, very young because it provides handy mnemonics for connecting and remembering otherwise more difficult to remember unrelated words, and for entertaining babies and some older children with the âsurpriseâ phonic connection between semantically unrelated vocabulary items, e.g., jumped over the moon.ran away with the spoon. Ironically, some nursery rhymes seem more adult than much rap: There are nursery rhymes that at least in part dispense with rhyme and give us a break from it, e.g., the first verse of âJack and Jillâ- only fell down and broke his crown really rhyme, since water and paper do not. (However, it has been claimed that âJack and Jillâ is as dark a tale as any told in gangsta and other rap.) I might even have liked, or at least used rap, when I was six- if I wanted to be like other kids and robotically skip rope half the day, using rap to pace myself. (Am I the only one who hears only the doggerel rhymes and boring rope-skipping rhythms of nursery rhymes in most rap?) Alas, I grew up (maybe too fast, past rope and rap). Donât Blame Jagger Above all, I am frazzled by the contrived rhyme at the expense of melody, sweetness, harmony, counterpoint, composition, rich instrumentation and just about everything else that the term âmusicâ used to mean. I forgave Mick Jagger for all those â-tionâ (âshunâ) rhymes: âsatisfacshunâ, âgirly actshunâ, etc., since the music was, in fact, music- and truly, very good music, if you ask me. However, without their great music, the rhymes of The Rolling Stones would be just as annoying as the relentless anti-musical rhyming of rap. This annoyance, to put it mildly, hit me one evening as I, trying to spoon up some quickly melting chocolate ice cream at the Sanya Bay beach on Hainan Island, China, suddenly got my ears pelted with booming American rap. (I canât be more specific: It all sounds the same to me.) That was in garish, grating contrast to the soft, melodic, sentimental, complex, sung Chinese pop music (âsungâ not being a dynasty) that had been piped out the same department store just minutes before. (If you want an iconic and splendid sample, try âZi Teng Huaâ (âWisteriaâ) by S.H.E.- an enormously popular girl-trio from Taiwan. Yes, it will sound sappy to anti-sentimentalists, but maybe magical to many others.) The stark contrast between our rap and the softer, sweeter Chinese pop could have been more striking only if I were a dog, blessed/cursed with hypersensitive dog hearing traumatized by raps booming-bass. I was hearing the difference between the MTV-style love of power (bang-bang guns, bling-bling by the tons, muscles, muscle cars, virility, etc.) and the Chinese pop-cultureâs theme of âthe power of loveâ (first loves, sweet reminiscences, wistful yearnings, etc.). I wanted to cry- and not because the rap song was sweetly sentimental. (It, like most rap, wasnât and didnât even try to accomplish that.) Can you really imagine anybody, thirty years from now, anywhere on planet Earth, upon hearing a 20th-century growling gangsta rap, e.g., Gotta shoot up my nose, crank up the Bose, prowl the hood, beat up somebody good, turning to a spouse of decades, eyes glistening with the tinge and twinge of memories, sweetly saying, âHoney, theyâre playing our song!â? Unmysterious Rap Supply, Puzzling Demand The fact that anybody wants to crank out rap is not in the least mysterious: One reason is that there are no unpublished melodies left to sing. With most permutations of short, easily remembered real pop melodies having been tried and exhausted by the commercial mass-market corporate music-machines of the late 20th-century, the easiest option was to dump melody- there were virtually none left, and who wants to be sued for plagiarism or, God forbid, to not be âoriginalâ? With more rap-sheet-related skills than real musical training (or talent), some gangsta rappers-in-the-making realized that talking is easier than getting into Julliard or even merely competently carrying a tune. No complicated instrument to play, no high Cs to hit. (Despite the temptation to conclude the name ârapâ is a contraction of ârap sheetâ, I wonât.) In addition, some quickly discovered that being a rap star is an excellent way to snag a lot of loot and boot, without having to use the weapons on your album cover. On top of that, people will, perhaps for the first time ever, LISTEN to you- again, even if you arenât pointing anything at them. So, the supply-side explosion of rap onto the pop-culture scene seems to be no mystery. But why the demand? Here are my best guesses: Percussion is an icon of power; pounding rhyme is a form of percussion. Power is everything in rap and hip-hop subcultures. Some drugs make monotonous beats, predictable rhymes and the resulting mental glaze-over seem utterly fascinating. A lot of people use drugs. Remembering rap lyrics and their rhymes can confer as much status in some quarters as a high score on the LSAT or doing volunteer work with the homeless. This is particularly impressive if the performer is otherwise regarded as uneducated. Having repetitive work (which a lot of young people have these days) is more bearable if there is a repetitive rhyme-and-drum beat in your head. Itâs the principle underlying the chanting of roadside rock-smacking-and-cracking chain gangs. Composing and memorizing the most complex rap lyrics, e.g., featuring rhymes within rhymes, is probably more interesting than Sudoku. A hunger for poetry- any poetry Blasting rap from your car boom-box will attract girls who fall into categories 1-6, above. Why Not Submit Rhyming Cover Letters? So, why not submit rhyming cover letters or give rapped answers to job interview questions? The short answer is simple. Go ahead and try it- but only if you are going to be evaluated by people to whom some or all of the points 1-7 somehow apply when you apply. Otherwise, thereâs almost zero chance that you will get their rap(t) attention, much less the job⦠â¦unless the boss or HR manager is a kid in daycare. ____________________________________ Note: This is one in a series of articles written by Michael Moffa while one the road, on the scene and on the job in China, autumn 2012.
